We are starting a structured training programme with our B group from Sunday 9th November concentrating on cyclists who are new to the sport or are returning after having been off the bike for a while (such as myself).

Our aim for the group is to build up fitness and cycling skills to be able to tackle Leisure Sportives including the Wicklow 200 next year as a group.

Hope to see you all on Sunday

The route for the 2009 Wicklow 200
shows some alterations from last year.
The principal changes are as follows.
(1) From Sally Gap to Hollywood by way of Kilbride - Blessington Lakes, (leaving out Lugalla and Wicklow Gap.) This brings us back to the West Wicklow terrain which was a standard part of all the earlier events.
(2) From Drumgoff Bridge to Rathdrum by way of the mountain road, commonly referred to by local cyclists as Glenmalure or the "Shay Elliott".
This is new territory for the W200 and is probably the only remaining climb of note in Wicklow that has never featured.
Donard and Rathdrum remain as the main checkpoints and with intermediate "watering holes" at Kilbride and Slieve Maan.
A map on www.wicklow200.ie will make it plainer and a full description of the route, with intermediate distances will be published in the near future.
The route for the Wicklow 100 remains the same as 2008.

A very special thank you to Martin Earley and his family who travelled over from their home in England to cycle with us. It was an honour to be able to share the road with an Irish Cyclist who has won stages in the two greatest stage races in the world, has achieved 19th in the Olympic road race and 20th in the Olympic MTB race and 7th in the World Championships. The 20k cyclists also got the chance to cycle with Martin's wife Cathy (Swinnerton) ex UK champion who came 9th and 10th in the World Championships

Thanks also to Linda, Mick and The Marie Keating Foundation, An Garda and all the Marshalls, all the members of the Naas Wheelworx CC who helped out especially Ann Marie ,Hugh, Lorcan, John and Declan who worked particularly hard throughout the year planning and publicising the tour.

Thanks to Centro and Wheelworx who supplied the bikes for the raffle and to Sharon and Laura for selling the tickets.

And of course thank you to all of you that turned up to cycle when it would have been so much easier and more tempting to roll over and go back to sleep.

See you all next year.

Daniel Martin today secured a superb victory in his debut pro season, winning the prestigious Route du Sud race in France. Assisted by the strong backing of his Slipstream Chipotle team, he maintained his advantage over all his main rivals on the concluding 207.1 kilometre stage to Castres and landed both the biggest win of his career and also the top Irish professional victory since the days of Kelly and Roche.

Still just 21 years of age, Martin made it into a crucial breakaway on stage one which gained over half an hour on the main field. That narrowed the list of contenders down to just sixteen riders. He was fifth on that opening leg to Boulogne sur Gesse, and then moved up to second overall when he placed sixth on Friday’s mountain time trial to Cauterets Cambasque.

Noan Lelarge won the race against the clock and started the following day’s gruelling mountain stage to Luchon Superbagneres seventeen seconds clear. He cracked and was listed as a non-finisher; Martin, on the other hand, had an excellent race, dropping all the other overall contenders on the final climb and finishing fourth behind three riders who had been clear in the day’s big breakaway.

He carried a one minute 42 second advantage over Christophe Moreau (Agritubel) into today’s final leg and successfully defended his lead. Jussi Veikkanen (Française des Jeux) won the stage.

Martin is expected to ride next week’s Irish road race championships in Cork. The son of former British pro rider Neil Martin and Maria Roche, sister of Stephen Roche, he opted for Irish nationality several seasons ago.
MARTIN TAKES RACE LEAD IN ROUTE DU SUD
By Shane Stokes
Jun 21, 2008,

                 Email this article

                                               © Shane Stokes

Talented first year professional Daniel Martin today rode superbly on the mountainous third stage of the Route du Sud, taking fourth place at the finish at Luchon Superbagneres and moving into the race lead.

The 21 year old had started the day second overall, seventeen seconds behind Noan Lelarge (Bretagne - Armor Lux), and 44 ahead of French champion Christophe Moreau (Agritubel). A break went clear early on and riders from it took the first three places on the stage. However Martin was best of the rest, dropping Lelarge and Moreau and taking fourth. He was one minute and 37 seconds behind stage winner Przemyslaw Niemiec (Miche Silvercross).

More importantly, the strong effort saw the Team Slipstream Chipotle rider take over the race leader’s yellow jersey. Moreau is now one minute and 42 second back in second place and, with the race concluding tomorrow with an undulating stage, Martin has a strong chance of taking the overall victory. Should he do so, it will be the biggest Irish pro win since the days of Kelly and Roche.

The 2.1-ranked Route du Sud concludes with a 207.1 kilometre stage from St Gaudens to Castres.

The route as you can see takes in the first and last sections of the Wicklow 200 so will be ideal preparation for anybody doing either the 100 or 200 routes in June.

For further details contact Eddy Lane 087 2395056
